This is a response to the following poll:
So, who invented pizza? It is a simple question with a complicated answer. The majority of you voted the Greeks with the Romans and then Italians following close behind.
Well, if we are to believe Virgil, it was the Trojans! Specifically, Aeneas and his band of refugees. At least, that is one interpretation of the curious verses found in Book VII of the Aeneid.
We find evidence of pizza-like foods as early as the 6th century BCE with the Greeks (flatbread with oil, herbs and cheese) and Persians (flatbread with cheese and dates on top). But if we are to find the origins of the modern pizza (with tomatoes), well, we can date that to at least the 18th or early 19th century Naples, Italy.
Honestly though, there really isn’t much to it. Take a flatbread, a pita, and throw a bunch of ingredients on top. Voilà! Something that can potentially be called a “pizza.”
love it! mmm feel like pizza tonight. I recall reading that tomatoes and tomato sauces were introduced quite late to the Italian cuisine Ευχαριστο
