It depends how you define alphabet, because the Phoenicians started using individual symbols for individual sounds, as opposed to individual words, but the "alphabet", alpha, beta, gamma, delta etc, is self-evidently Greek and it was they who created the writing system that we all use, albeit heavily adapted, today. Robin Lane Fox's "Travelling Heroes", which is referenced in my book "In Search of Aeneas", is a superbly written account of how it all came about.
This poll comes one day later. Yesterday, 24 May in Bulgaria we have selebrated the day of the alfabet. More precisely the invention of the Cyrillic alfabet in the 9th century in the medieval Bulgarian lands. and following epoch of literacy and enlightenment.
