This was a really good episode. Wish it had been a bit longer. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you very much for the kind words. I do have more on the topic of the Odyssey but I plan on covering it in a future episode. I also have more on the Sea Peoples and again, in a future episode. I try to limit episodes to in and around 30 minutes only because with our modern and busy lifestyles, it is difficult for many to sit down and enjoy a longer episode. Thanks again!!!

So glad to hear more is coming! For those of us who have struggled with the Ancient Classics (yes I just made that up) especially where Homer is concerned, your efforts are making it all make so much better sense. The Sea People have me intrigued. Have a great weekend.

Your response means a lot to me. Thank you very much. It is comments like these that continue to drive and motivate me to push out more episodes (and hopefully soon, videos).

Hi Petros,

The Sea People ep was fascinating!

Here are my take-aways:

They were Individual and combined military navy, at times pirate-like peoples

Some groups ethnically diverse

Other groups ethnically homogeneous

So, the sea people were, over time, a mix of Mediterranean ethnicities with a shared goal of divesting Egypt of its wealth and/or political power/influence. Is that correct? If so, is it too simplistic of a view?

Alicia,

Thank you! That was a fun one. The problem with studying the Sea Peoples is that they weren't just "one thing." So, yes. I imagine military groups, merchants, individuals, entire families leaving a now impoverished land looking for a new life. Think of the refugees today. Syrian refugees flooded into Europe and the Americas a few years back to escape political persecution and turmoil. Ukrainian refugees are doing the same today to escape the war. It was not too different 3200 years ago.

As for identification, the names are believed to reflect their area of origin and the group in which they are migrating with. There could have been a mix of ethnicities under each label but unfortunately, history did not preserve that detail. And yes, many groups likely traveled together and this is made apparent in historical inscriptions from both Merneptah and Ramesses III.

And you aren't wrong. Egypt was seen as the center of wealth. They all saw it as an opportunity to take advantage of Egypt's powerful position of the time.
